[ Yangachi + Technology + Art ]

Jeremy Bentham이 1791년에 원형감옥 파놉티콘을 제안했을 때 영국정부는 받아드리지 않았지만, 후대 여러나라의 정부들은 파놉티콘의 개념을 매혹적인 것으로 받아드렸던 것은 사실이다. 그래서 파놉티콘의 규율 권력을 사회에 스며들게 하는 규율사회의 기본원리인 파놉티시즘으로 전환시켰다.

1960년대 이후 사람들의 관심 밖이었던 파놉티콘은 여러나라의 정부들에 의해 전자감시 혹은 정보감시라는 이름으로, 사람들이 주민등록증(전자 주민카드), 스마트 카드, CCTV, 몰래카메라, 에셜론, 전화도청, 전자지문, 전자건강카드, 인터넷 실명제, NEIS 등 무수히 많은 감시장치들로 이루어진 파놉티콘 세계에 들어와 있음을 알렸다. 이렇듯 여러 감시장치가 사람들이 의식하지 못할 만큼 일상생활에 들어와 있지만 감시 시스템을 의식 못한 체 지내기에 문제가 더욱 크다고 할 수 있다. 그래서 이 문제를 미술형식을 빌어 파놉티콘과 파놉티시즘의 메커니즘을 비판적으로 검토한 후, 역감시적 시스템을 모색하고자 한다. (과연 그럴까요?)

Public Moment

”Public Moment” features an exhibit which explores the most recent trend of local contemporary arts in the public realm. Showing the diverse contacts where artists are engaged with the society, this show addresses the possibilities of blurring the line between art and publicity and plays a role in estimating the present status quo of public art.

As revealed in the title “Public Moment”, this offers an overview of activities related to the public art as well as the moments of communicative movements happening ‘now’ all around the world. This exhibition may draw the viewers’ attention to the issue of enhancing urban environments, the projects for the marginalized, the criticisms on established systems, and proactive communications with the local community, introducing the new domains of public art linking individuals as social members to artistic creativity. Hopefully, this works as an opportunity to reconsider the ongoing definition of public art and it’s roles with the most creative perspective and suggest a direction for upcoming alternative public art projects.

“공공의 순간(Public Moment)”은 공공적 영역과 만나는 예술의 가장 현재적인 흐름을 보여주고자 기획되었습니다. 예술가들이 사회에 개입하는 다양한 지점들을 보여주는 이 전시는 예술과 공공성이 만나는 발화점들을 동시다발적으로 드러냄으로써 그 자체로 공공미술의 현재를 가늠해볼 수 있는 지형도가 될 것입니다.

“순간(Moment)”이라는 표현에 함축되어 있듯이, 각각의 전시공간에는 ‘현재’에 일어나는 공공미술의 활동들과 그 속에서 소통되어지는 움직임의 순간들이 펼쳐집니다. 그 안에는 도시에 대한 문제 제기, 소수자를 위한 프로젝트, 제도적 시스템에 대한 비판, 지역 공동체와의 실천적 커뮤니케이션 등 개인과 사회, 예술의 긴밀한 역학관계 속에서 발생되는 예술가들의 다양한 활동이 집결되어 있습니다. 이를 통해서 공공미술의 정의와 역할에 대해 되묻고 가장 창의적인 정의를 떠올릴 수 있다면, 그 자체로 미래의 대안적 공공미술을 향한 출발이 될 수 있을 것입니다.
