e-seoul project workshop

e-seoul project workshop
The general idea is to spend like 5-6 days with a group of people into a workshop before the opening of the general event to set up a space to use it like an open space during the expo. Something simple and easy to set up with a cheap budget. The idea is to build a physical space, an open network in which we can share resources and knowledge about several topics.
The main idea is to create a public area into the exhibition place where to set up a social physical interface. This will be a public space during the expo and before the opening it should be a space to enjoy a workshop where to exchange experiences with local people and to learn how to set up an e-project infrastructure. So "individual-citizen republic project" is an international, 1-week workshop for students, specialising in the areas of design, visual communication, art, media and culture sciences. Subversive and participative networks in the virtual "public" space: open source, free software and "Hactivism" directed by Daniel García Andújar, the desire for a space of experiment related to the issues of technology that define new media, and orients media to artistic practice, and onto culture and society.
Individual-citizen republic project
Is it possible to extend citizens' individual abilities using the new information and communication technologies? Could this extended citizen ability evolve towards a new concept of citizenship whose opinions and initiatives are echoed in political, economic, cultural and social processes? INDIVIDUAL-CITIZEN REPUBLIC PROJECT is a work in progress based on the idea of building and exploring a social prototype of an autonomous citizen that promotes, uses and develops resources obtained from public information sources. This process takes shape in space as a platform, understood as a cooperative space, enabling the work done to be shared through workshops, actions and other instruments, opening up a vast range of possibilities for collective intervention and participation. This platform uses and develops technologies such as freeware and open source software, giving a greater degree of independence and autonomy and enabling the rest of society to visualise resources obtained collectively. Facilitating access to technology is one of the founding commitments of Technologies to the People. In keeping with this, we have created the INDIVIDUAL-CITIZEN REPUBLIC PROJECT workshop to coincide with media_city Seoul 2004.

You ask me about the language and some other things
We will work with a multi-language platform, we use Linux operative system in the computers so it more of less easy to split into another language, the people will learn how to do it. The e-projects that I am running are CMS (Content Management System) using WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) to editing. So, nobody needs special skills to configure and administrate it. My idea for this event is just to start with the concept and to discuses about the future platform, I must take a look about precise needs, because I don't know the context and I need to start with a first step. I think is the best way to do it, them we can see if is possible to follow and in witch sense.
Materials for the space:
- tables of 150x90 cm according to general design of the space.
- 1 bank of work according to design 120x250. (height 95 cm)
- to create a zone to work we have to be able chairs for the tables of computer, preferable with wheels but it is not essential if others of the house can be obtained.
- 10-15 folding chairs for the workshop time
- Machine of refreshments or similar
- another furniture to create a nice atmosphere, like sofas, cafe machines is allow, etc
Materials:
- Net Lan (1mb <)
- Electricity
Equipment:
Materials and resources, which there are to have:
- Hacklab space and workshop: (material routers, cables, monitors, material office, electrical equipment and technical)
- Computer System (we could use material of second hand, but with the appropriate characteristics, minimum Pentium II, 128 mb of ram Ethernet card and 4 gb hard disk, although we will gather all the one that is to our reach) the objective is to reuse and to recycle material that can seem obsolete but that it can perfectly be operative for us the public institutions, universities and others store enormous amounts of this, I do not believe that it is a problem. We could also buy some from second-hand shop, it shall be use in a future media lab, or in a social NGO.
-DIY RJ-45 Network cable, Switch 10/100 to create a physical network, Electric Cables CPU-Monitor feeding Network Strip, Cd-r 80' 48x
- Wireless System: (antennas, cards,), always if we like to have a free wireless Internet connection into the space, it would be useful and is very easy and cheap
Presentations and teaching:
- VHS, DVD, Equipment of sound
- Video projector
